Some Advice...
Greetings all!
I am a Kiwi who is married to a lovely Russian lady and we have been married for 10yrs now.
I have been reading the posts here and there is a lot of cynicism and scare-mongering. So I thought I would clear up some missconceptions.
1/ Trust your own instincts.
2/ Make a good effort to learn Russian. Plenty of places on the net to guide you there.
3/Be aware of Russian protocol: Greet with zdrastvooeche (phonetic), always use 'vi' until you get to know some-one well and are invited to use the more personal 'ti'. Take note of important things like 'vrach' = Doctor, Aptecta = Chemist/pharmacy, Pochta = Post Office, Vagsal = central rail station etc.
4/ Dress like the Russian people do, you'll just be part of the crowd then.
5/ Russia is no more dangerous than any other foreign country and nowhere near as bad as some, e.g. Brazil.
In closing; There are some scammers, see list 1/.
Katia and I travel back and forth to Russia (I have residency there) regularly and never had any trouble of any kind.
Take a trip there and enjoy your stay, it's a beautiful country with beautiful people and steeped in history. Relax and enjoy yourself!
